Brown Patch Disease Removal
The name’s pretty self explanitory, your nice green lawn now has big, brown, circlular patches. Control. This disease is more prevelent in Zoysia lawns and more likely to show up in the winter when soil temperatures drop below 70 degrees at night. The best way to control brown patch is to maintain your lawn properly. During the summer, do whatever you can to eliminate thatch. Thatch is the spongy, organic layer that lies under the surface of the grass. It consists primarily of dead, decaying plant tissue that is stuck in the stems of the turf. This is a petri dish for fungus.
The easiest way to eliminate thatch is to either scalp the lawn down, you really can’t go too low, and collect the clippings and vegitative matter. The best way to remove thatch is to verticut the lawn. This process uses a machine that will slice and dice the thach layer into submission, the material can then be removed and your lawn will be able to breath again. The lawn will look bad for a few weeks, I love to see the expressions on my customer’s faces when they have their first look, pricless, but the lawn will be back and better than ever in a few weeks.
The next important cultural consideration is water. Don’t over water, it just promotes a shallow root system that quickly puts the turf under stress and promotes disese by keeping the turf too wet. Third is nitrogen, people want their lawn green and the easiest way to accomplish that is to pound it with nitrogen. Reduce the nitrogen and spoon feed the grass with the proper minor elements.
